BJJ Mats – Jiu Jitsu

BJJ JUITITSU MATS

HARD ABRASIVE BJJ MATS?

WE FEEL YOUR PAIN! SUFFER NO MORE WITH OUR PROFESSIONAL GRADE tatami bjj MATS TO MEET EVERY BUDGET!

Paid for the more expensive higher density tatami jigsaw mats but still they are horrible for groundwork? News Flash! That’s because the denser a mat is the more unforgiving it is! It’s also more expensive as there is more material packed into the same space!

Our Jiu Jitsu tatami mats are lower burn and low-mid range density to reduce burn and be more comfortable for BJJ. EVA jigsaw mats will not be as good for BJJ as Judo tatami but they are a good budget option. For even less burn options consider smooth roll out mats or tarp covers.

BJJ Mats

When purchasing a tatami mat for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), it’s important to consider several key properties to ensure safety, comfort, and durability. Here are some essential factors to look for:

  1. Thickness: The thickness of the Jiu Jitsu tatami mat is crucial for providing adequate cushioning and impact absorption. For BJJ, mats should be at least 30mm thick. Thicker mats offer better protection against falls and takedowns, but they should not be so thick that they affect stability.
  2. Material: High-quality mats are typically made from dense foam, such as EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) or polyethylene foam. These materials provide a good balance between firmness and cushioning. The surface should be made of a durable, non-abrasive material like vinyl or tatami-textured cover to withstand the rigors of grappling and provide enough grip to prevent slipping.
  3. Size and Shape: Consider the space where you’ll be training and choose mats that fit well. Mats come in various sizes and can often be interlocked like puzzle pieces to cover larger areas. Make sure the tatami mats are large enough to safely perform all BJJ maneuvers. Sometimes 2m mats are preferred to minimise gaps.
  4. Tatami Surface: A traditional tatami-textured surface is preferred in many BJJ gyms. This texture provides a good grip for footwork and movement, reducing the risk of slipping.
  5. Non-slip Backing: Look for mats with a non-slip backing to keep them securely in place on the floor, especially during intense training sessions.
  6. Water Resistance and Hygiene: Mats should be water-resistant and easy to clean. BJJ involves close physical contact, so hygiene is critical. Choose mats that can be easily wiped down and disinfected to prevent the spread of bacteria and odors.
  7. Durability: Ensure the mats are durable and can withstand repeated use without tearing or losing their shape. High-quality mats are an investment and should last several years.
  8. Portability and Storage: If you need to move or store the mats frequently, consider lighter options (1m x 1m)  or those that come with storage solutions like rolling mats.
  9. Certifications and Safety Standards: Check for any certifications or compliance with safety standards. Mats should be free from harmful chemicals and safe for prolonged skin contact.
  10. Price and Warranty: Balance your budget with the quality of the mats. Don’t compromise on safety and durability for a lower price. Also, check if the mats come with a warranty or guarantee.

Remember, the right mat can significantly enhance your BJJ training experience, providing a safe and comfortable surface to practice Jiu Jitsu. Take your time to research and choose a mat that meets all your needs.

Finally always read the reviews to get the feedback from fellow professionals. This 30mm tatami mat is an example.

N. B We use the term Jiu Jitsu Mats or BJJ mats but there are variations in spelling such as Jujitsu Mats; Ju Jitsu Mats and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Mats.
