MMA Mats

MMA Mats

MMA Mats UK. Mixed Martial Arts Jigsaw tatami mats for BJJ, Jiujitsu and MMA. Our MMA mats vary in density from 90kg/cbm to 120kg/cbm. The higher density mats are heavier, absorb more impact, are more durable and harder wearing. It is the density that generally drives the price due to the amount of EVA in the mat. The softer mats are more comfortable for groundwork but are slightly less hard wearing. Each mats measures 1.05m 1.05m including its edging strips and 1m x 1m with edging removed. Mats are either 30mm or 40mm in depth. Take into account the surface that the mats will be laid on e.g. carpet vs concrete as this is obviously a component into the thickness of mat required as it weather practitioners are using head protection. The grip of the mat is a factor, we offer both high traction dimple effect, sometimes known as T-Pattern. This grip is well suited to stand up combat sports which changed direction quickly such as 'Blitzing' techniques used in Sport Karate and Kickboxing. The dimple grip is however quite abrasive for groundwork. Tatami grip is good for stand up martial arts but less burn for ground sports such as MMA.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS WHEN SHOPPING FOR MMA MATS

When shopping for mats suitable for Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), it’s essential to consider several factors to ensure safety, durability, and appropriate use. The type of mat you choose can significantly impact the performance and experience of athletes. Here’s a comparison of three popular types of mats used in MMA training: jigsaw mats, judo mats, and roll-out mats.

1. JIGSAW MATS

Pros:

  • Interlocking Design: Allows for customizable layout configurations and easy assembly/disassembly.
  • Portability: Easy to transport and store due to their interlocking design.
  • Cost-Effective: Generally less expensive than other types of mats, making them suitable for large areas on a budget.

Cons:

  • Durability: May wear out faster than other mats under heavy use, particularly where there is significant impact or friction.

Key Considerations:

  • For MMA we recommend 40mm for maximum impact absorption required for heavy throws without head protection.
  • Ensure the surface texture provides enough grip but is not abrasive to skin. This should be Tatami grip.

2. JUDO MATS

Pros:

  • High Impact Absorption: Designed for throws and falls, making them ideal for the high-impact nature of MMA. More that the open cell nature of foam allows air to pass between the cells making it much softer to land on compared to the closed cells of EVA jigsaw mats and XPE roll out mats.
  • Durability: Typically more durable, made to withstand heavy use and frequent impacts.
  • Stability: Usually heavier, which helps prevent the mats from shifting during use. Our Judo mats have a latex base which is very high grip.

Cons:

  • Cost: Generally more expensive than jigsaw mats.
  • Less Versatile: Due to their weight and bulk, less easy to move and reconfigure than jigsaw mats. Consider 1m x 1m for storage, consider 2m x 1m for less joins and more even training surface.

Key Considerations:

  • Consider thickness and firmness; judo mats are thicker for protection against falls.

3. ROLL-OUT MATS

Pros:

  • Ease of Setup: Can be quickly rolled out for use and rolled back for storage, making them very convenient.
  • Smooth Surface: Provides a continuous surface without cracks or creases, ideal for both striking and grappling. We supply both smooth or mid range grip tatami (low burn).
  • Versatility: Can be used in various setups, either as a permanent or temporary flooring solution.

Cons:

  • Storage: Requires sufficient space for rolling up and storing, which may not be ideal for smaller gyms.
  • Surface Durability: May get damaged more easily from equipment or intense use compared to thicker judo mats.

Key Considerations:

  • Look for a thickness and material that provide both comfort and durability.
  • Ensure the mat material is non-slip to maintain safety during training.

GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR ALL MATS

  • Hygiene: Look for materials that are easy to clean and maintain, as hygiene is critical in a gym environment.
  • Size and Coverage: Ensure the mats cover the desired area completely without leaving exposed areas that can lead to injuries.
  • Environmental Conditions: Consider if the mat material is suitable for your gym’s environment, including humidity, temperature, and exposure to sunlight.

Choosing the right mat will depend on your specific needs, including budget, space, type of use, and frequency of use. Each type of mat offers unique benefits and may be more suitable for different aspects of MMA training.
